Recipe: Traditional Greek Macaroni with Kima (Ground Meat)
Ingredients (serves 4–6):
- 400 g (14 oz) macaroni or short pasta
- 3 tbsp Zoë Extra Virgin Olive Oil
- 500 g (1 lb) ground beef or lamb
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 can (400 g) tomato puree or crushed tomatoes
- 2 Zoë Greek Dried Bay Leaves
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon (traditional touch)
- ¼ tsp ground allspice (optional, traditional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Grated kefalotyri or Parmesan cheese for serving
- Fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions:
- Cook pasta according to package instructions until al dente, then drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Sauté onion and garlic until soft and fragrant.
- Add ground meat and cook until browned.
- Stir in tomato puree, Zoë Greek Dried Bay Leaves, oregano, cinnamon, allspice, salt, and pepper. Reduce heat and simmer gently for 20–25 minutes until the sauce thickens and flavors meld.
- Remove bay leaves before serving.
- Toss the cooked pasta with the meat sauce, or layer in a casserole for baked macaroni style.
- Garnish with grated cheese and fresh parsley.
Serving Suggestion: Serve with a traditional Greek salad, olives, and crusty bread for an authentic family-style meal, just like homemade in Greece.
